Witch

“As my home, so my body.
As my body, so my mind.
As my mind, so my heart.”
- excerpt from Visions of Vanaheim

Magic and paganism can seem so intertwined that it’s difficult to separate what makes one a witch, set apart from the rest of those who follow the old gods. Both inspire thoughts of ritual, altars, and chants, but the underlying purpose, I feel, differs.

To be a witch means to use magic as opposed to pure prayer. Fundamentally, it is to raise and direct energy in accordance with your will to change consciousness, while I would categorize prayer as a more celebratory or reverent exercise. The witch’s tools–the resins and oils, the herbs and incense, candles and salts–these are all but accessories. The real power comes from within, not just entreating other spirits or Gods for aid.

In that respect, I’m merely a novice witch. I have an understanding of the elements and a rudimentary grasp on divination, but when it comes down to energy work I have a long way to go. To Know is one thing, To Will is very much another.
