Saxon
wiþ æþelingas; a biþ on færylde
ofer nihta genipu, næfre swiceþ.”
For the last decade I’ve drifted from Neo-Wicca to Ásatru and back before finally discovering Anglo-Saxon Heathenry, a path somewhere in-between. I keep the Gods of our mother tongue, Teiwaz and Thunor who gave their names to Tuesday and Thursday, who are linked to the same Germanic gods that gave rise to the Norse pantheon. The difference, aside from the names and language, lies more in philosophy and emphasis.
While Ásatruar are generally reconstructionists and conservative or libertarian in political philosophy, many Saxon pagans are more progressive and accepting of UPG (unverified person gnosis) with liberal leanings. We embrace the wiccecraeft of our heritage and see the Ēse, Wanes, and Eoten as all deserving of veneration. Mystical experiences are possible, and some of us celebrate the turning of the wheel as observed by the Druids. Overall, it is an evolving practice, not one enthralled to Christianized and incomplete lore dating from an arbitrary period in Scandinavian or Germanic history.
