Hudson
This year marks 350 years since my family came to the Hudson River Valley from the Netherlands. I was born in a hospital looking out over the river, I’ve woken up to its ever-changing waterscape for over half my life. I’ve lived elsewhere, but no place has yet to surpass the beauty I’ve beheld at its shores, on the water, or atop the mountains overlooking it.
Suffice it to say I consider this place my home, the home of my ancestors, and hopefully the home of my descendents.
Venerating the spirits of place is an important part of any pagan practice, and for me that means celebrating the fruits and beauty and experience of the river, known to the natives as Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, “river that flows both ways.” As such, you can find my thoughts on local specialties and happenings around the mid-hudson area from a pagan perspective.
